“The Scream”
——————–
What does
“A burning bar of soap” mean?
A policeman’s lot is not a happy one,
As they sung in “The Pirates Of Penzanze.”
Upstairs was the wife
And our two little ones,
And there I was filling in my crime sheets
In the days before computers.
I heard a scream
And looked out of the window
I couldn’t see anything,
But then there was another scream.
I grabbed my tunic and helmet
And walked outside
And saw nothing.
I walked out into the village street,
Not a soul was to be seen.
After a while, I called it a night
Went to bed and slept.
The next night I was in bed
When the misses woke me and said
“Charlie, I just heard a woman scream!”
This time it was in jim-jams and slippers
When I walked into the empty street.
Then there it was, a scream,
A scream that sent shivers through my bones,
And it was coming from the house across the street.
“Do be careful luv!” My wife was by me in her dressing gown
And giving me my truncheon.
The blood-curdling scream hit up again
Then I banged on the door.
“Oh, sugar!” A man’s voice shouted,
I was about to smash the window
When our young married neighbours came to the door
Dressed in Shakespearean costumes.
They had been practising their roles
In the forthcoming production of Macbeth.
Guess who was playing Lady Macduff
Watching her children being killed?
“Next time” I sighed, “Do tell me first!”
My kids were out on the street
And a police car could be heard,
For my wife had rung for help.
We got given two tickets fot the production
It was only an amateur affair,
But “Lady Macduff” gave a performance
Worthy of an Oscar,
And I shivered inside when she screamed,
And I thought about
“A burning bar of soap”.

I love “The Scream” hehe…~Jaime~
I think I am liking Charlie. I hear this sort of 1920′s music in the background when I read his work. seems like a character that you will get to know quickly.
I remeber Dixon of Dock Green used to like watching that show hmm shows how old I am
Glad the links cheered you up some. Take care and have a good week

charlie is becoming one of the many voices i love hearing from, and isabella has the same idea i had with the 1920′s jazz or just a simple horn playing in the back round as i read on. you don’t need me telling you the skill and grace in your pen but i would like to say thank you for sharing it with us all =)
I like the scream…great piece…
thank you for your comment, yes I did write it. I have a site: http://darkenedserenity.deviantart.com

awesome piece of work…

I wanted to try something different. Hence the lack of wordiness in the first poem. Personally thought that words might just clutter it.
As for the second “them” would ruin the pathetic attempt at syllable balance. Perhaps with a british accent it is pronounced differently in regards to rhythm, I’d ask my mother but she’s been in the states far too long.

I’ve never heard of Dixon Of Dock Green”.
These were very interesting.
Evenin’ All!
I really do like Charlie. The Scream sounds like something that could really happen. So funny. Of course, the George Dixon story probably has happened time and time again–that is sad!!
yes, the scream sounds like something that could have actually happened to you…lol, it was funny
Little before my time…so actually haven’t heard of it….wondering what i missed now.
Thanks for your kind comments, btw.
Have a great Sunday!!!

very nice i thought. i loved them both. very entertaining, while portraying a message. nice. nice.

Both pieces were great. I like first one better, reminds of what happen to Jeffery Dahmer.
You seem to be doing your copper pieces very well. I remember Dixon of Dock Green. I used to like that series, the one joy of being so old. one remembers all the oldies. Do you ever look at Bargain Hunt on your television ,that man David Dickinson seems to have made a name for himself .I wish he would not wear such tight trousers though. I get to see the show each night (old ones) at 9.30 pm on Foxtel ,and I do enjoy it, as I used to be a collector and go to the fairs over here ,”can’t get around much anymore” wasn’t there a song called that. Cheers Marj

I love the “jim jams.” I’ll bet they had trains on them!
heh. yeah i agree that the vernacular/prose style of the copper’s poetry fits his character, which is what my original comment was about. i realized that it was intentional, and i think that it gives it a more “in tune” feel. i think it’s defiantely a style worth keeping.
Well, first of all we are honored that the Lord P would want to comment on our humble posts. If we knew where he wanted to comment, we would have opened it up for a private comment.
The reasons are: the first one is a header. A response to someone else’s post that may hang around for a while. The second two are private jokes aimed at one person each. The fourth is political, and I just didn’t feel like more comments on the election. So the fifth is the active post on which comments are being made–though some have used it to comment on 1-4 anyway, and that is OK.
Clever to use the guestbook to comment that way.
Thanks again for coming around. I am glad that something stimulated a comment you were not able to make.
Hail Eris

it must seem like i’m making a lot of snap judgements, but i am not. i have gone to skool w/these kids since we were all like 3 or 4. we played together in kindergarden, graduated elementary school together, passed jr. high, and are now in high school. i’ve known them all for about 10 years…and although i actually like most of the kids in school, a lot of them in my grade i do not like at all…and it’s not because they’re obsessed w/sex. i can understand that. its only human. they’re just very ‘snobby’
basically, i live in manhasset, a sort of wealthy community where evryone has a lot of money and nothing to do with it…and some people are very nice, and others simply greedy and rude. i’m not stereotyping them as the snobby rich kind, because like i said, many are very nice. but a lot of these kids are both pampered and spoiled and need to grow up a bit. actually, a lot. btw, i am certainly NOT the clever kind…you obviously have me mistaken for someone else. just because someone is asian and makes straight A’s and is in honors and advanced classes, *ahem: me* does NOT necessarily make them intelligent.
and i am sincerely sorry for rambling on and on like this. truly.
Thumbs up for Charlie.
you’re enjoying this character, aren’t you…

…two entirely different takes…one serious and bloody and all that…the other quite funny, a good take on ol’ Will…
Excellent selections today. Very nice.
pineapples are cool

I love the first one. It tells such a story which are my favorite poems.
I surfed your way by means of the Xanga contest that neuroticfitchmom is hosting. Just dropped by to see what you were all about. Good luck in the contest!
running a bit late, only just saw your request. The answer is of course to everything, have to dash, should have been somewhere 30 mins ago.
would love to have stayed to chat…

Absolutely loved both pieces! “The Scream” was my favourite, though. “Out - damn spot!” I loved reading “Macbeth” out loud in my Senior year of high school English/Literature class. I was Lord Macbeth through most of it; we just read the lines aloud at our desks – no stagework. You provide such great entertaining reading; thank you!
OK, I give up… none of the comments mention it … what does “a burning bar of soap” mean?
exceptional, today.
Amazing what people will do to those they supposedly love to get even though the woman must have been doing some cheating. Hardly seems worth messing up your life by killing someone no matter what the reason and killing your own kids? that one always makes me wonder.
Your “scream” was a fun story. It sounds like the actress outdid herself in practice as well.
Meant to ask that question myself, “A burning bar of soap” mean?
lord what the fike is goin on magi angel
