• The Reverend Toby writes…

Do you know I have written over 100 poems? I never meant to be a poet. I love poetry though. Edward Thomas, R.S. Thomas, Dylan Thomas, just to mention one surname!

I never wanted to bore people with my own little woes, hopes and dreams, and I never showed my poetry to anyone until I had a blog.

I find the right-wing American view of our Lord most disturbing you know, there is so little compassion in it. Jesus was so compassionate that people mocked him for his compassion. Today Jesus would help gay people get married, respect the divorced and even understand abortion.

That was why God sent Jesus to be among us, to show us that we are all equal in the eyes of God, if we show understanding and kindness to others.

At the Second Coming there won’t be a heaven just for those who cry out the Lord’s name. Jesus showed us that was not the case. Muslims, athiests and others will go to heaven if their hearts are pure. And many who have taken holy orders, be it Bishops who molest children or Reverends who preach hate…there can be no room in heaven for those, those whose Christianity is only a mask for cruelity and selfishness and spite.

Perhaps that is why I write poetry, too many people are put off by Christianity because too many Christians have lost the plot, that is, it’s what is in a person’s heart is that matters, not what they have been taught to believe.

Here are three of my poems, the first to a fellow blogger who spoke of her father, the second about a dying parishoner, the third about my late wife who was killed when she lost control of her car some years back.

I hope you love them. if not, I am sure the Lord will love you, even if you do not believe of his existance.

Light Of The World. (For Brendaclews)

Through your stained-glass window I see

How so near to God you are,

And when the sun shines through the colours

You know that He is not far.

You know how near he is to you

Even when you close the window at night,

You know He is there with your father

Two men always in your light.

Whatever poets may have given you,

However must fun, and yes, strife,

There can be no man nearer to you

Than the ones who gave you life.

It was a long day’s journey into the night

    And into the next morning.

But still I sat with him,

    My eyes heavy with soot,

My mind fighting back my dreams…

    I still sat with him.

I sat with him till he died

    And it was worth it.

    For he opened his eyes

    Just before the very end

And thanked me for my journey

Even as I prayed for his.

I dozed off doing my own sermon

    Later that morning.

    “Was it THAT boring vicar?”

    Asked a young man later.

    I smiled and said “yes,

    But isn’t life wonderful?”

    The Reverend Tobias Trontby †

    “A moment in time”.

    Standing by the gate

    And singing,

    And always be there

    Singing…

As the whole world begins to evolve

    Around only those few moments

    And no other.

    You singing the hymn

    I always loved,

    Singing it

    At our front gate;

    Ignoring the fierce rain

    And seeing only me.

    Singing, always singing

    In the photograph I took

With the camera of my mind

    On that wet winter’s day

    After my first sermon here

    In this old church.

    I close the gate,

    A passing motorist stops

    Wondering why that old vicar

    Is standing by his gate

    In the pouring rain.

  • Thank you for your comment. Sometimes while I write-the muse ‘disappears.’ I have been struggling to write more–it isn’t as easy as I thought–baring my true feelings. Sometimes, the depressions sets back in, especially if I’ve not exercised, and I find myself back in my old rut.

  • Sweet Reverend Tobias Trontby, I am honoured that you have dedicated a poem to my stained glass -:) and to me, very honoured, but my surname is spelt as it was in Sherlock Holmes – Clews – an olde English name, to be sure. Many *hugs* reverend, and blessings (blush) Brenda

  • Hey again.

Trust me – I don’t expect (or even want) a TON of regular commenters. It is impossible (as you mentioned) for me to keep up with everyone that comments. My main concern was people that subscribe and never comment. Just makes me curious as to why they visit, you know?

    Your posts are always refreshing.

  • Not that’s a sermon I can embrace.

    Beautiful poetry, Terry. As always.

  • Old Toby seems to have the right idea. I aM UNDECIDED ABOUT RELIGION i HAVE NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY ONE HAS TO HAVE CLERGY DRESSED IN ROBES AND SWAYING OF INCENSE. AND ALL THE GOLD ORNAMENTS ETC. I HAVE ALWAYS FELT THAT IF PEOPLE ARE RELIGIOUS AND WANT TO PRAY THEY DON’T NEED ALL THAT. IF THEY MUST PRAY TOGETHER, AND NOT ALONE ,WHY NOT A FIELD OR A PLAIN HALL. IT IS THAT ASPECT OF RELIGION I DESPISE. If there is a God which I doubt ,he lets some funny things happen. I often wonder why the religious like to have all that pomp and circumstance .I was christend Church of England and when I went to it, it was plain ,at later times when I went to funerals and weddings ,i was amazed at the money they spend on all the fittings, the worst the Catholics and Greeks. Sorry if I upset anyone its your choice ,but not mine. Another thing i could never understan with the Catholic religion you go and ask for forgiveness and say your penances with beads .I presume, then you commit the same sins, and are forgiven again. I had a Catholic stepmother and I always wondered how she always had to go to church each week ,will she be in a Heaven and me not ,as I don’t go to church and pray. I am really quite undecided, common sense tells me there is nothing after death, and yet people cleverer than brighter than me believe there is. Sorry about caps;ock I was not shouting Your fault Tobias you have made me ramp. Most of my family feel as I do but not because of what i have told them they have always been free to do what they want. Cheers Marj P.S Wonder how many visitors I will lose if they read this?

  • It’s been so long, how is life with you?

I hope you continue to take delight in it, fueled onward by a creative soul and a light heart

  • If only the good Reverend had been mine while I was still being schooled in Christianity, it might have stuck. And I agree (even though I am American) That the right wing Chiristianity is a bunch of poo! Jesus taught love and acceptance of others, loved them for their faults and weaknesses…where has this gone? So sad…it must be why the interest in alternative faiths is growing by leaps and bounds, disillusionment in Christianity.

  • Light of the world was out of this world, LordP…… totally awesome and even a tad haunting…

Ahhhh…sometimes “the boring vicar” can be such a precious sweetie, don’t you think?

“A Moment In Time ” was so much better than Whitney Houston’s Olympic version….

Miss you, LordP. Lovely week to you!

  •
Matthew 11:24
But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
Matthew 11:23-25 (in Context) Matthew 11 (Whole Chapter)

Mark 6:11
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
Mark 6:10-12 (in Context) Mark 6 (Whole Chapter)

It is not that difficult to obey and come to the Lord Jesus Christ. “Come though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” His death was for your life. Compassion? Of course. Judgement? Of course. Else He wouldn’t be God now would He?

  • Was jezus sent by God or did Jezus just run away from home to help us with some new ideas? Something new like love?

  • The Rev’s insight is magnificent. Always one of my favorite’s of yours. Keep up the grand work. I’ll raise a whiskey to the Rev and you.

    WHISKEY!!

    DRINK!! DRINK!! DRINK!! DRINK!!

  • You should be a preacher, Lord P!! I couldn’t agree more how religions have been twisted!!!

  • *I never wanted to bore people with my own little woes, hopes and dreams, and I never showed my poetry to anyone until I had a blog.*

me too. but youre such a good writer sir, i dont think anyone here could ever get bored. its just one of your magical touch that brings us smiles.

  • well said – touching poems memories and reflections and insights help us to be closer to God I think - I agree with : I find the right-wing American view of our Lord most disturbing you know, there is so little compassion in it. Jesus was so compassionate that people mocked him for his compassion

and: many who have taken holy orders, be it Bishops who molest children or Reverends who preach hate…there can be no room in heaven for those, those whose Christianity is only a mask for cruelity and selfishness and spite..

and: too many people are put off by Christianity because too many Christians have lost the plot

turning to spirituality to make us better human beings and help us understand God, ourselves and fellow beings feels like a better motive to search for or serve God than to use religion or faith to divide and elevate ourselves over others…

  • Once again, the poetry on here.

    Has left me in awe.

  • The Reverand has the right spirit that Christ intented to be. At least the way I want him to be. Who know how the real Christ was?

You are right about the compssion, we need more of that in our world and too many have forgotten to teach it.

  • True mercy is to lift up the Truth, not vain imaginations of what we want the Truth to be to “fit” our fancy. Truth Mercy Love this is the Christ ask Him, He’s there for the seekers.

Wallowing in pity, swimming in excuses, we spend our days hopeless …. “for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. For I percieve that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.”

    ~Acts 8:21b – 23

verse 24 [the act of intercessory prayer]

“Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.”

    And still I pray.

  • *bows head in respect to your work*

  • Perhaps that is why I write poetry, too many people are put off by Christianity because too many Christians have lost the plot, that is, it’s what is in a person’s heart is that matters, not what they have been taught to believe.

Correct! I and my Father are One, I in Him and they in Me. Christ in the heart.

If any man add or take away the Words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life. . .Rev 22:17 & 18 Writing your own words as the Words is a very dangerous thing to do.

  • Everything you have written is an opener and amazing to read. Hope you feel better and that you heal fast so you can write!

    M.A.

  • They showed “The Fisherman’s Shoes” on tv this week and never before was I so impressed at the finish where the pope in the story pledges all the church’s wealth to help the poor and hungry. At one time, the Catholic church had much wealth, but not now with the victim’s suing them. It is a different world than the one the Fisherman’s Shoes inhabited.

I will sign on the messenger occasionally. Hope you come on.

  • Hope you are feeling better soon, Terry. WE need your interesting and sometimes controversial writings!

  • You are right in your comments and your poetry is lovely
